New Forest District Council is looking for an enthusiastic governance professional to join and take a leading role in the Democratic Services team. It is an exciting time to join the Council as it prepares to implement new arrangements following an Electoral Review that will see the number of councillors reduce from 60 to 48 from May 2023, with 26 new wards.
You will join a busy team of Democratic Services Officers, and with the direction of the Service Manager, you will lead day-to-day operational business. You must have a good understanding of local government as you will lead a team that advises Officers and Elected Members. You will have experience of working in a local authority governance role and supervising or managing staff.
Working as part of a professional and friendly team, you will be organised, accurate, able to think logically, plan ahead and be able to work under pressure to pre-determined deadlines. You will be an effective and experienced communicator, accustomed to engaging with senior people in an organisation when dealing with complicated and sensitive matters.
You will be confident and tactful in dealing with elected Members and Senior Officers, showing political sensitivity and an understanding of the local authority landscape. Experience in broadcasting technology will also be an advantage as the Council webcasts its public meetings.
NFDC supports flexible working, through a Worksmart initiative that includes a blend of remote and office-based working. There will be an expectation of attending and supporting Council meetings in person. Travel both inside the district and the wider Hampshire and South may also be required from time to time.
